Suitability for an enteral feeding tube

Pharmaceutical assessment of the actual order/form before tube administration; does not set a therapeutic dose.

Procedure

  1. Confirm patient, medicine, tube end site, bore/material, feed and fluid restriction with the clinical team.
  2. Seek instructions for the exact authorised product. Do not crush modified-release or enteric-coated forms without specific suitable evidence.
  3. Assess dissolution/dispersion, particles, viscosity, osmolality, excipients and dose loss in the actual system. A liquid form does not guarantee freedom from blockage or unchanged absorption.
  4. Choose a compatible enteral device/adapter and verify the smallest withdrawal. Assess recovery/rinsing where needed without arbitrary extra active to compensate.
  5. Written instructions administer medicines separately. The clinical team defines suitable water, flush volumes and necessary feed interruption for the medicine/patient.
  6. Record sources, decisions, limitations and monitoring in F-021. A change of tube, administration site or formulation requires reassessment.
Stop criterion

Unknown compatibility, uncertain delivery or nonindividualised instructions: do not declare tube suitability.
